Being protestant

Short presentation

Protestant Church of the Robertsau is a member of the Fédération Protestante de France (FPF). As such, we share the convictions common to all christians as expressed in the Apostles’ Creed and we recognize the seven following statements :

« Glory to God only »

Protestants affirm that nothing is holy, divine or absolute a part from God.

They are therefore vigilant towards any party, value, ideology or human enterprise that claims to be absolute, intangible or universal.

For God is a God of Freedom, who calls for a response of Man’s own free-will, Protestants are favorable towards a social system that respects plurality and freedom of conscience.

« Christ only »

Christ risen is victorious over Death. Through him, anyone is reconciled with God and one’s life finds meaning. This Good News (Gospel) is the keystone of every christian life.

« Grace only »

Protestants affirm that a person’s worth does not depend on their qualities, or their merit, or even on  their social status, but on God’s free love that grants to each human being their priceless worth.

Therefore, Man has no reason to try to earn Salvation through pleasing God.

God’s Grace is unconditional. His free love makes Man able, in turn, to love his neighbours for free.

« Faith only »

Faith is born from personal contact with God.

This meeting may emerge suddenly in one’s life. Most often however, it is the outcome of a long pathway strewn with doubts and questions.

However, faith is an unconditional gift of God.

Every human being is summoned to receive it in complete freedom. Faith is our answer to God’s declaration of love to all through his Word, in Jesus Christ.

« The Bible only »

Christian Protestants recognize the authority of the Bible only.

Only the Bible can feed their faith; it is the ultimate reference when it comes to any theological, ethical or institutional matter. Through the human testimony that it reveals, the Bible is the Word of God.

The biblical texts outline general principles from which each protestant, and each Church traces their faithfulness.

« Reforming ourselves incessantly »

The Churches congregate in one same faith and hope. All those, men, women or children who confess explicitely our Lord Jesus Christ as the one who gives meaning to their lives.

Ecclesiastic institutions are human realities. « They can make mistakes », said Luther. In reference to the Gospel, Churches must constantly keep a critical eye on, and question, their own functioning. Everyone must take on their part of responsibility and be witnesses of the faithfulness to the Word of God.

« Universal priesthood »

Among the most innovating principles of the Reformation, universal priesthood ensures an equal place for each baptized member of the Church.

Pastors and laymen together share the government of the Church. The pastors have no special seperate status in the Church. They take up a particular duty to which their theology studies have led them.

With a spirit of unity, they see to the preaching and the administration of sacrements during the services, the animation and accompaniment of the community in which they practice their ministry, and the theological formation of its members.
